The U.S.’s second all-time leading goal scorer Clint Dempsey will be coming back to Major League Soccer.

The MLS’s Seattle Sounders acquired the 30 year old forward for a league record transfer fee of $9 million from Tottenham Hotspur. The details of the deal are yet to be confirmed, but Dempsey, who played in the MLS for the New England Revolution for three years (2004-2006) would get paid $32 million over the next four years; which would guarantee him the largest base salary in the history of Major League Soccer.

“The American” as Fox Soccer broadcaster Rob Stone emphatically calls him, played one season for Tottenham. Under Andres Villas- Boas, Dempsey appeared in 29 matches, logging 7 goals and 5 assists, but failed to become a staple in the starting line-up.

The former Spurs and Fulham attacker from Nacogdoches, TX has 35 goals over the course of his U.S. National team career.

Dempsey could play his first game next Saturday, Aug. 10 as Seattle takes on Toronto FC at 4 p.m.
